  1. 1892-1974. French composer, a member of the
  2. group of composers known as Les Six. Among
  3. his works are the operas Christophe Colombe
  4. 1928 and Bolivar 1943, and the jazz ballet La
  5. Creation du monde 1923. He lived in both
  6. France and the USA. He collaborated on
  7. ballets with Paul Claudel. In 1940 he went to
  8. the USA as professor of music at Mills
  9. College, California, and became professor of
  10. composition at the National Conservatoire in
  11. Paris 1947. Much of his later work - which
  12. includes chamber, orchestral, and choral
  13. music - is polytonal.
