1892-1974. French composer, a member of the
group of composers known as Les Six. Among
his works are the operas Christophe Colombe
1928 and Bolivar 1943, and the jazz ballet La
Creation du monde 1923. He lived in both
France and the USA. He collaborated on
ballets with Paul Claudel. In 1940 he went to
the USA as professor of music at Mills
College, California, and became professor of
composition at the National Conservatoire in
Paris 1947. Much of his later work - which
includes chamber, orchestral, and choral
music - is polytonal.
